Following the death of Eric Dane<\/a>, many of former co-stars, including Patrick Dempsey<\/a>, Alyssa Milano<\/a> and Nina Dobrev<\/a>, shared heartfelt tributes remembering the late actor.<\/p>\n

Dane, the celebrated actor best known for his roles on Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> and Euphoria<\/em> and who later in life became an advocate for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) awareness, died Thursday at the age of 53<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His representatives said Dane died from ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease, less than a year after he announced his diagnosis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world,” said a statement that requested privacy for his family.<\/p>\n

“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he\u2019s received.”<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t \t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t \t<\/span>\n\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\n

Dane developed a devoted fanbase when his big break arrived in the mid-2000s: He was cast as Dr. Mark Sloan, also known as “McSteamy,” on the ABC medical drama Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em>, a role he would play from 2006 until 2012 and reprise in 2021. In 2019, he did a complete 180-degree turn from the charming McSteamy and became the troubled Cal Jacobs in HBO\u2019s provocative drama Euphoria<\/em>, a role he continued up until his death.<\/p>\n

Dane’s\u00a0Grey’s Anatomy\u00a0<\/em>co-star Dempsey shared details about working with the late actor after news of his death spread.<\/p>\n

Dempsey, who played Dr. Derek Shepherd (a.k.a. “McDreamy”) on the medical drama, spoke about how he felt once he heard the news during an appearance on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show<\/em><\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n

“It’s hard to put into words. I feel really so sad for his children,” Dempsey said. “I was corresponding with him, we were texting, so I spoke to him about a week ago and some friends of ours went in to see him and he was really starting to lose his ability to speak.”<\/p>\n

“He was bedridden and it was very hard for him to swallow, so the quality of his life was deteriorating so rapidly,” he continued. “He was the funniest man. He was such a joy to work with and I want to just remember him in that spirit because any time he was on set, he brought so much fun to it.”<\/p>\n

“He had a great sense of humour. He was easy to work with, we got along instantly,” Dempsey added. “First scene was him, in all his glory, coming out of the bathroom with the towel on looking amazing, making you feel completely out of shape and insignificant.”<\/p>\n

Dempsey said there was “never really any competition” between the two on the set of the show.<\/p>\n

“There was just this wonderful mutual respect. He’s wickedly intelligent, and I’m always going to remember those moments of fun that we had together and celebrate the joy that he did bring to people’s lives, and the real loss is for us, who don’t have them anymore,” he shared.<\/p>\n\n

Dempsey said Dane “did an incredible job at bringing awareness” to ALS.<\/p>\n

“Those remaining days… it just reminds us that we all have to celebrate every day like it’s our last day. It’s something that we have to remember and certainly in a world where there is just so much crisis and there is so much tragedy that we really need to be grateful for every moment that we have,” he said.<\/p>\n

Kevin McKidd, who portrayed Dr. Owen Hunt in Grey’s Anatomy<\/em>, shared a photo of Dane on his Instagram stories, writing, “Rest in Peace Buddy.”<\/p>\n

Kim Raver, who played Dr. Teddy Altman, shared a photo<\/a> of her and Dane on Instagram.<\/p>\n

“Eric was a light. You\u2019d see it effortlessly shine from him on the set of Grey\u2019s<\/em> as well as when he was with Rebecca and the girls. During filming he\u2019d get this twinkle in his eye and with a mischievous look, he would deliver with perfect comedic timing, a line of dialogue that would floor you! You will be missed,” she wrote.<\/p>\n
