Arlington is a historic and gorgeous town that’s been a hot topic of conversation for the last three hundred years. Now one of the top travel destinations in America, this Virginian city is able to show off everything it has to offer.
These are some of the top sights to see while you’re here and some ideas for how to spend your time!
Mount Vernon Trail
Named after the area George Washington called home, the 18-mile Mount Vernon Trail is a paved multi-use area that stretches from his estate to Theodore Roosevelt Island. Along this trail, you can catch a wonderful view of the Potomac River, parts of the Washington D.C. skyline, and gorgeous lush greenery that would stun anyone.
This path is a common one for biking, jogging, walking, and whatever other kind of exercises you want to do while here. If you’re in town for a vacation and want to make sure you don’t fall off the exercising wagon, this is a great stop for anyone to make.
Netherlands Carillon
This 127-foot campanile is home to a 53-bell carillon in Arlington and was a gift from the Dutch people’s ingratitude of the U.S.’s involvement during and after World War 2. Perched on a hilltop surrounded by tulips, it’s a stunning piece that looks like nothing else in the city. This instrument and tower still function and are used for concerts in the summer. Plaques throughout the gorgeous location are on exhibit so visitors can understand the importance of this instrument and why the country received it.
Village at Shirlington
If shopping is your favorite way to spend a vacation, you’re not alone! Built in 1944, the Village at Shirlington is one of the oldest shopping centers in the country; it was the first large one to open in the Washington, D.C. area.
Although it’s a historic area, you can still enjoy shopping and dining here, getting to know the area in the same way that people have for nearly eighty years. If you plan on visiting, make sure to wear some comfortable shoes! Not only is this an expansive piece of land to wander around, but you may need to look into Arlington real estate to house all of the things you’ll want to buy while you’re here!
DEA Museum
Have you ever caught yourself wondering what the DEA gathers throughout the day? This museum is owned by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and is one of the unique museums in the world. With exhibits on everything from secret compartments in suitcases and cars to the things people smuggle and sneak through security, this is an eye-opening museum on what is really going on under the surface of society.
This museum is only open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10 to 4, so make sure you plan your visit if you want to stop in and see something truly different!
