After a hard-fought battle, an overtime game-winning goal has given the U.S. their first men’s hockey Olympic gold medal since the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY.
Jack Hughes made the goal within two minutes after overtime began with an assist from Zach Werenski and on the anniversary of the fabled Miracle on Ice.
It was a physical men’s hockey Olympic final started Sunday morning against the United States without Sidney Crosby, who is out with a lower-body injury.
Six minutes into the first period, Matthew Boldy scored the U.S.’ first goal of the game on his team’s first shot.
After trailing for the first half, Canada’s Cale Makar tied it up with the second period ending one point a piece.
Each team drove for the net in power plays in the final minutes of the third period, but the game was sent to overtime with Canada and the U.S. tied at one goal apiece.
Crosby sat out Canada’s 3-2 comeback win over Finland in Friday’s semifinal after his right leg bent awkwardly on a hit in the quarterfinals against Czechia at the Milan Cortina Games.
Connor McDavid served as captain in Crosby’s absence for the second consecutive game. McDavid had several chances during overtime, but U.S. goaltender Connor Hellebuyck stopped each one.

Hellebuyck made 41 saves during the gold medal game.
The gold medal is the United States’ third ever, with the team not having won since 1980.
It was also a reversal for the men’s American team after losing the gold to Canada in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
Support for the team began to pour in from across the country, with Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre among those congratulating the team for its silver medal.
“Congratulations on a hard-fought and well-earned silver, @TeamCanada,” Carney wrote on X.
“Team Canada gave it everything, showed true grit to the final buzzer, and made all Canadians proud with their effort and heart,” Poilievre said in a post on X. “Keep your heads held high.”
Provincial premiers also weighed in, echoing similar sentiments.
“While the result wasn’t what we hoped for, you inspired a generation of young Canadians and made our country proud,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford wrote.
“What a battle,” said Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. “Silver for Canada in an absolute classic against the Americans. Proud of this team and our hockey heart.”
Crosby is already a two-time Olympic gold medallist. The Pittsburgh Penguins captain scored the famous overtime winner in Canada’s victory over the United States in 2010 and captained the country to another title in 2014.
At the Olympics, Canada’s NHL stars won Olympic gold with victories over the U.S. in 2002 and 2010, repeating as champions in 2014 against Sweden.
NHL players did not participate in the 2018 and 2022 Games.
The 38-year-old from Cole Harbour, N.S., had two goals and four assists in four games in Milan. He holds the Canadian NHL-era record of 16 career Olympic points.
Defenceman Josh Morrissey was ruled out with an upper-body injury. The Winnipeg Jets blueliner hasn’t played since the tournament opener in the preliminary round.
Canada holds a 15-game winning streak at NHL-attended games, dating back to a round-robin loss to the U.S. in 2010.
Canada also won last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off — an Olympic appetizer — with an overtime victory in the final against the Americans.
The U.S. thumped Slovakia 6-2 to advance to the gold-medal game at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena.

Wonderful exciting game! Bravo Canadians! Both teams played well but I think Canada lead the way throughout the game despite the last goal.
I’ve been in contact with Global/Corus. Letters have been written and hopefully they will deal with this disgusting scourge flooding this forum with its vitriol and using our names to further its disgusting slag of any who are against Trump. This shows perfectly what a MAGAt is all about, what the psycho acolyte following Trump is made of.
There was a hockey game? I missed it in my meth induced haze. Geesh
McDavid cost Canada the gold.
Trying to go to the net and be a hero instead of setting up a tic tack toe and leaving Canada scrambling in their zone. Hes playing against the best for goal not Anaheim on a Wednesday night.
Least he got the MVP thats all ge really cares about anyway.
More winning for Merica !
Haha!
I will, and f * ck you Dirty Hands.
James have a good sleep you will feel better in the future, Hopefully LOL.
So now I’ve been diagnosed with multiple personality disorder. I wonder if becoming gay caused this sh it. I need a troll to stick up my azz right now.
Oh I have more than one troll now woe is me. I like to call people brownies because I am racist. I would love to know how many are actually trolling me as that would be funny to find out. Love #2 ❤️
We’re a country of pus sies, that’s what it boils down to. I use to like pussy but now I love the co ck. Of anyone has a problem with that they can go f *uck themselves. My life sucks but that’s my life not yours!!!
Those gold medals will look good on Trumps wall alongside his peace medal.
Oh and I forgot. I have many young male suitors in my life. Many many many. Life is great in kelowna. Meth break. I’ll be back soon.
The reason Canada doesn’t want to become a US state is because none of their hockey players would make the US Olympic team.
Oh Mr. Troll. To bad huh? My life is great. I make decent money, have a sweet place to live for now and drive a newer vehicle. I dont have to annoy and demean folks to feel good. If I annoy, thats because truth usually does sting. Call me whatever you like but if what I’m saying makes you want to troll me and lash out, thats all you.
Canada sucks. Just like my life
Canada out played the USA but couldn’t convert the open net opportunities but my issue is the horrible officiating.
Canada deserved the 4 minute minor for high sticking but then not long after, USA commits the exact same penalty but gets a 2 minute minor.
Then, for the second time, the officials MISS a bench minor by the USA when there were 7 players on the ice.
This is very poor officiating and it’s not the first time.
Congratulations CANADA, you’re gold to us all.
I HATE CANADUH!!
Big deal. It took the USA 45 YEARS, that is 45 YEARS to BEAT OUR CANADIAN HOCKEY TEAMS. We canadians should be celebrating the fact that WE BEAT THE USA 45 years IN A ROW, LOL…and this was no big win because it all came down to an OVERTIME GOAL not even a big win.
Phuc U troll.
George Orwell in ‘1984’: “Films, football, beer, and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult….”
Here come the excuses and “but they are Canadian players” whines.
It was a great game! And regardless if the USA won or not, it was Canadian players that allowed them the win. Go Canada!
CM can’t get’er dun in big games!
Sid would have got it done!
Elbows up. Lol! This is our game! It’s called karma folks. Elbows up
Well let’s face it. We did it to ourselves. We talk trash. Elbows up, hockeys our game, screw the usa. We did it to ourselves by running our mouths non stop. We turned on our neighbor without even trying to negotiate we went the elbows up way and that’s our fault.
Hellebuyck and some questionable reffing. Canada was clearly the better team. US had a hot tender. Period!
Didn’t take long for the chirper to come out. Canada played a solid game. Poor refereeing was the difference. Whatever. Sure wasn’t USA skill by any means. What were the shots? 46 to 28 or some such thing? If it wasn’t for Hellybuck, it would have be 6-2 or so.
look at the bright side, US Olympic team proved that they are not looser as someone said they were! Congratulations!
The good news, 51st, after short naturalization process, we will teach you how to play hockey…🇺🇸
